FINANCE MANAGER

The O’Briens Corporate Group is a growing and diversified Northern Ontario organization with operations across transportation, hospitality, food services, accommodations, emergency management, logistics, and community support services.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Finance Manager will oversee the organization’s accounting and financial management activities while providing practical financial guidance to senior leadership and operational managers.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Oversight and Reporting

  • Oversee the organization’s accounting and financial activities across its companies and business divisions;
  • Provide monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports;
  • Identify financial trends, emerging risks, operational concerns, and opportunities for improvement;
  • Present financial information and recommendations to the CEO;
  • Lead the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets;
  • Provide financial insight during strategic planning and organizational growth discussions.


Accounting Operations and Team Supervision

  • Provide oversight and support for accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, banking activities, reconciliations, general ledger entries, and other accounting functions;
  • Supervise, support, and provide direction to Finance Clerks;
  • Assign tasks, monitor workloads, and ensure deadlines are met;
  • Provide training, guidance, and performance feedback to finance staff;
  • Review financial transactions for accuracy and ensure expenses and revenues are assigned to the appropriate company, department, project, or contract;
  • Ensure government remittances and financial obligations are completed accurately and within required timelines;
  • Assist with HST filings, payroll remittances, Employer Health Tax, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board requirements, and other applicable reporting obligations;
  • Support month-end and year-end closing procedures;
  • Prepare financial records and working documents for external accountants and auditors;
  • Coordinate annual financial reviews and audits and respond to requests for supporting information.


Financial Controls and Organizational Accountability

  • Review existing financial practices and recommend improvements that strengthen accuracy, efficiency, and accountability;
  • Establish appropriate approval processes and financial controls;
  • Ensure financial transactions are properly authorized and documented;
  • Identify areas of financial exposure and recommend measures to reduce organizational risk;
  • Develop practical financial policies and procedures that support both accountability and operational efficiency;
  • Promote consistent financial practices throughout all companies and departments;
  • Support the prevention and early identification of errors, duplicate payments, reporting concerns, and financial irregularities;
  • Promote responsible financial management throughout the organization.


Systems and Process Development

  • Identify opportunities to simplify and improve financial processes;
  • Improve processes related to invoicing, expense approvals, purchasing, financial reporting, record management, and project tracking;
  • Recommend practical solutions that reduce administrative workload while improving accuracy and financial oversight;
  • Remain informed of changes to accounting practices, taxation requirements, government obligations, and financial management standards.



QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A college diploma or university degree in accounting, finance, business administration, commerce, or a related area;
  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is considered an asset;
  • An equivalent combination of education, professional training, and relevant experience may be considered;
  • A minimum of three to five years of progressive experience in accounting, financial management, or a related leadership position;
  • Experience working within a multi-company, multi-location, or multi-division organization is considered an asset;
  • Experience supporting year-end accounting processes, external audits, and government reporting requirements is preferred.

  • The ability to analyze financial information and provide practical recommendations;
  • Strong budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and cash flow management skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy;
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines;
  • The ability to lead and support a small finance team;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify practical solutions;
  • Confidence working independently while remaining an active member of the management team;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • The ability to explain financial information to individuals with different levels of financial experience;
  • Professionalism, accountability, initiative, adaptability, and sound judgment;
  • The ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion;
  • Proficiency with accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and common business applications;
  • Experience using QuickBooks Online is considered an asset;
  • Bilingualism in English and French is considered a strong asset.
